Mark 2

Verse 1-12

Jesus heals the man who came through his roof.

  • Where does this story take place?

Jesus had a home! This was Jesus’ house – he would have worked as a carpenter in Capernaum, he owned this house.  It was his house they wrecked!

  • How does knowing this make Jesus more real, and this story more personal?
  • Why were the regions scholars so annoyed about the forgiveness thing?

Jesus had taken something that was just for the temple and the realm of God, and made it everyday, here in his broken house.

  • With this in mind, what does the hole in the roof also represent? – A hole in their way of life, of kingdom coming in.
  • If we are Jesus followers what things are there in this story, that we should do too?

Forgiveness and healing, bringing the far near, bringing the kingdom into the everyday.

Verses 13-17

Calling Levi

  • What job did Levi do?  Why was that not a popular job?

Unlikely people – Jesus’ followers were a bunch of Unlikely people.

  • Why did that annoy the religious people?
  • What was Jesus’ comeback?
  • Do you need a doctor like this?
  • Who do you know that does?

Verses: 18-28

Feasting or Fasting

  • Is Jesus saying we shouldn’t fast or keep the Sabbath?

No!

Both stories are saying something new is here, in town, right before your eyes.  Stop looking back, look at what is right in front of you.  There is nothing more important than meeting and being with Jesus. Fasting and the Sabbath are both important but nothing was more important than that at this moment.

  • Where do we let rules or ways of doing things, or busyness get in the way of being with Jesus?
